About this app

Review supported features, privacy, and the differences between the web and Windows versions.

A reading view for technical MarkdownThe web version brings over the free reading features of Simple MD Viewer wherever the browser can provide them safely.

Tables, code, and task lists

Formats tables, blockquotes, lists, and fenced code, with syntax highlighting for supported languages.

YAML, TOML, and JSON Front Matter

Shows document metadata as a readable structure while keeping the original source available.

LaTeX math

Supports \(...\), \[...\], and $$...$$. Optional $...$ delimiters can be enabled in settings.

Mermaid diagrams

Renders flowcharts, sequence diagrams, and other supported Mermaid syntax with strict safety settings and source fallback.

Tabs, outline, and find

Switch between several temporary tabs, jump to headings, and find text within the active document.

Themes, fonts, and spacing

Choose System, Light, or Dark and adjust body, heading, and code fonts, size, line height, and margins.

Designed not to send your documentYour selected Markdown file is processed for display in this browser. Its contents are not uploaded to or stored on this website’s servers.
  • File contents, names, and open tabs disappear when you close or reload the page.
  • Remote images are not fetched. Only local images explicitly selected with a folder can be displayed.
  • Rendering libraries are served from this site, without third-party CDNs.
  • Only document-independent reading settings, such as theme and text size, are stored on your device.
Where the web version differsBrowser permissions and strict network controls take priority, so this is not a pixel-for-pixel copy of the Windows app.

File association, history, and automatic reload

A website cannot become your operating system’s default .md app, and this viewer does not retain file information. The Windows app is better for daily use.

Local images and links

Relative images and Markdown links work only within a folder you explicitly select. Remote images stay blocked.

Math and Mermaid rendering

To keep a strict CSP, web math uses browser MathML and Mermaid is displayed as an image. Fine typography and selectable diagram text differ from the Windows app.

Printing

The web version uses browser print. It does not include the Windows app’s preview and detailed print controls.

Frequently asked questions
Is the web viewer free?

Yes. The current web version is free and requires no account. Future distribution is undecided; there are no ads or paid features on this page today.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The selected file contents are processed for display in this browser and are not uploaded to or stored on this website’s servers.

What can it render?

It supports core Markdown, tables, code, YAML/TOML/JSON Front Matter, LaTeX math, and Mermaid diagrams. Raw HTML is disabled for safety.

Which extensions and encodings are supported?

.md, .markdown, .mdown, .mkd, .mkdn, .mdwn, and .txt files are read as UTF-8, up to 10 MiB per file.

Are file contents or tabs saved?

No. Reloading the page clears open documents. Only document-independent reading settings, such as theme and text size, are stored locally.

Can it display local or remote images?

Relative local images can be displayed when you select their folder. Remote images are not fetched.

Can I edit or overwrite a file?

No. This is a read-only tool focused on comfortable reading.
